Consultant Spotlight: Melany Schmidt

Favorite part of being a consultant?

My favorite part is being able to help companies win new business and make a difference to everyone who works there.

What is the secret to managing a successful proposal?

I think the secret is constant communication, especially when there are numerous subcontractors. Status calls with a “Go-to-Meeting” shared screen set-up really makes a difference in ensuring everyone is on the same page and knows their deadlines and commitments.

Any tips for writing a winning proposal?

For all large proposals, I conduct a strategy session right up front to create a features and benefits list and win themes. Using the features and benefits and win themes throughout the proposal really creates differentiation and a winning proposal.

Biggest proposal pet peeve?

My biggest proposal pet peeve is lack of graphics. Graphics really professionalize the proposal, make it easier to read and better convey messages. Graphics should be planned along with the rest of the proposal, not just as an afterthought at the end.

Where was your last vacation and what was the highlight of the trip?

My last vacation was to Key West, Florida and the highlight of the trip was a tour of the Ernest Hemingway house. He was a fascinating man with obvious appeal as a writer. I also enjoyed Key West’s low key tropical vibe while still only a short flight away!

Do you have any hidden talents?

I pride myself in being able to work on all aspects of a proposal, so I’ve become well versed in the FAR, Small Business Plans and of all things Pricing Tables!

If you could meet anyone in the world (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

I would like to meet Mother Theresa and Princess Diana who sadly both died the same week. Mother Theresa’s work with the poor and Princess Diana’s land mine charity work made huge impacts in the world.
