Consultant Spotlight: Gabriel Smith

Favorite part of being a consultant?

Being a consultant is such a rewarding experience. Not only have I met new people, but I’ve also had the opportunity to continuously learn from my peers. I’ve learned so much from different perspectives.

What is the secret to managing a successful proposal?

Communication and good leadership. I try to be flexible to the needs of whoever the client is and try to work in a way that works best for them. I am also a fan of over-communication. For example, I try to create the schedule or milestones based off of what suits their needs. I try to work around their schedule and take an approach that fills any gaps or holes that fits their needs.

Any tips for writing a winning proposal?

Use concise and meaningful language — take out the fluff. I’ve always thought that proposals need to be written more journalistically. This should be done in shorter sentences, using concise language, and deliver your message early. I also think that incorporating as much of the solicitation’s language as possible is important. It shows understanding and provides compliance.

Biggest proposal pet peeve?

Lack of communication or transparency. Proposals are truly a team effort and cannot be written in a vacuum. Working together is incredibly important.

Where was your last vacation and what was the highlight of the trip?

My last vacation was to Kure Beach, NC. I am actually vacationing in Kure to get married this week! We always rent the same house because it is in perfect walking distance to the beach, pier, dog park, and various restaurants.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I’m not sure if I have any hidden talents, but I do enjoy trail running, hiking with my dogs (Lola and Bowie), and brewing beer. I also enjoy coaching and judging debate competitions at Broad Run High School. I’ve had the pleasure of attending nationals with the team for the last several years.

If you could meet anyone in the world (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

That’s a tough one. There is a whole slew of authors and people I would like to meet. I think I would really enjoyed going to a pub and speaking to J.R.R. Tolkien or Ray Bradbury. I would be very interested in their thoughts on the world today.
